A BISHOP Auckland airman fought fatigue and struggled against sore limbs for more than a 100 miles in one of Europe's largest walking event.
Senior Aircraftsman Andy Wilson, of the RAF Regiment, whose father John still lives in the town, was part of the British military contingent taking part in the Nijmegan marches in Holland. Andy joined the RAF in 1996.
The annual event attracts 40,000 entrants, walking over 30, 40 or 50km courses every day for four days.
Andy, 23, a former pupil at King James I School, was taking part in the match for the first time. He said: "I came out to do this for the social life. I have been suffering from blisters but I'm still going to complete it. The atmosphere has been great - a really good laugh."
A large percentage of entries for the event come from military teams all over the world. Rules dictate that they cover 40km each day, with male entrants under the age of 50 each carrying 10kg in their packs. Nijmegan residents line the streets to give their support and offer drinks and sweets to the marchers.
