A 14-year-old girl has won the chance to challenge for a place in the national hockey team.

At the end of the month Hannah Baker, from Crook, will take part in a national assessment camp for players from the North of England.

It follows her participation in a regional Active Sports talent camp last month, launched by athlete Steve Cram, to recognise and develop sporting talent.

Hannah, of Hollowdene Garth, hopes that the camp will lead to a place on the under-16 England squad, fulfilling her ambition to represent her country.

She said: "I was over the moon when I was asked to take part. I am really proud to play for my school and county teams, and to represent England would be great."

The rise towards top level hockey has come as a surprise to Hannah, who only started playing about three years ago. She said: "My mum used to play, so I thought I would give it a go during one summer break and enjoyed it.

"I went on to play for my school, playing for the 1st Xl with sixth formers, clubs Durham City then Sunderland Ashbrooke, and the county.

"I play hockey because I enjoy it, but it is good to know the top coaches think I am good, and that gives me confidence to go to regional and national trials and improve."

Her parents, Chris and Philip, are proud of their daughter's dedication to the sport. Mrs Baker said: "We are very proud and, admittedly, a little surprised at how quickly she has taken to it and how well she is doing."
