POLICE hope to trace the owners of stolen car stereos recovered in a series of swoops in the area.
Detectives have seized a number of items, including 14 CD players, from homes in and around Spennymoor, near Bishop Auckland, this summer.
They are hoping the items can be returned to their rightful owners, but are appealing for help to match them up correctly.
Detective Constable Jason Corbett, based at Spennymoor police station, said: "We are looking through our computer records, but there have been so many similar incidents reported that we need the real owners' help.
"Some items are very similar, possibly because they have been stolen to order.
"So if someone believes we may have their property it would help if they could take a look for themselves. Perhaps they will remember a scratch or dent that identifies their stereo."
The property is believed to have been taken from vehicles in or near Sedgefield, Spennymoor, Bishop Auckland and Ferryhill since January, when the spate of thefts began.
Det Con Corbett said: "It is not just stereos that have been removed from motor vehicles, we have also recovered tools such as a large bow saw and a step-down electricity transformer.
"It seems that many of the items have been used to purchase drugs or would be sold at car boot sales."
Police have reminded car owners to make life difficult for potential thieves by ensuring they follow vehicle security advice. No property, such as money or mobile phones, should be left in view, stereo fronts should be removed and steering-locks or alarms fitted.
Anyone who thinks they may be the owner of any of the items photographed should visit Spennymoor police station, in Wesleyan Road, next to the town's leisure centre, which is open until midnight daily.
People can also call Newton Aycliffe police station on (01325) 314441 and ask for the Spennymoor help desk.
