ARTS chiefs are hoping that a new name for a town hall will herald a bright future for the venue.
The civic hall in Stanley will be re-named the Lamplight Arts Centre when it re-opens next month. The rebranding will follow an overhaul of the centre.
The name comes from a seam that formed part of the old Louisa Pit. Residents voted it top of a shortlist of seven choices at a public meeting in Stanley in June.
This week the name change was approved by Derwentside District Council.
General manager of theatres and the arts, Nick Wiggins, said: "The name was always one we felt we could live with, but the people had the final choice, and we are glad to say they were attracted to it as well."
The venue will close for refurbishment from September 1 to 7. This will include a complete revamping of the reception area, installation of a computerised box office system, re-carpeting of the Derwent Suite and the main stairway and the replacing of some of the seating. It will re-open on September 7.
