A LIFEBOAT was called out yesterday afternoon when the rising tide threatened to trap a mother and her son at the foot of a cliff.
The inshore lifeboat from Sunderland arrived within minutes to see Alison and Matthew McAlpine, who were on holiday from Buckinghamshire, scrambling to safety up a 15ft cliff at Ryhope, near Sunderland.
A Humber coastguard spokesman said a witness raised the alarm at 3.40pm.
