MORE than £230,000 was raised in the region last year for children's charity NCH.
Figures released last night show the region at the forefront of fundraising efforts for the charity.
York was one of the top fundraisers, with £30,000 collected; £26,500 was raised in Newcastle and £14,000 in Sunderland.
Other areas which raised considerable amounts include Harrogate (£10,428), Gateshead (£9,090), Darlington (£7,698), Stanley, County Durham (£6,576) and Chester-le-Street (£5,680).
Chief executive Deryk Mead said: "The projects the NCH run go a long way to changing lives and giving young people the opportunity to really shine."
The NCH aims to raise £200,000 during an appeal starting at the end of August, aimed directly at helping abused children.
