A NEW scheme is offering Durham area homeowners discount cavity wall and loft insulation.
Unusually, the grants, which will cover part of the installation costs, are available for people who do not claim benefit. Schemes are usually targeted at benefit claimants and pensioners.
Cavity wall insulation for a three-bed semi-detached house with gas oil heating will cost £150. Loft insulation can be installed for £156, a 40 per cent saving.
Cavity wall insulation for homes heated by electricity or solid fuel will cost £90, a 70 per cent saving and lofts can be insulated for £130, a 50 per cent saving.
The scheme, Durham Energy Savers, has been set up by Scottish Power and Durham City Council.
Councillor David Bell, who is responsible for environmental matters, said: "This scheme means we can save money on bills and keep our homes warm throughout the cooler months.
"Many local people should be able to benefit from Durham Energy Savers as a result of our partnership.''
Grants are available on a first-come-first-served basis.
