ULCERS, missing teeth, swollen limbs, fever and death - there was nothing quite like the good old days.

It was the yesteryear of Middlesbrough explorer Captain James Cook and, more especially, the scourge of scurvy in the Royal Navy of the 1700s which was remembered at a special event this week.

Middlesbrough Health Action Zone healthy homes and healthy eating project came up with the idea of working with Middlesbrough Council to demonstrate the need for healthy living, against the backdrop of the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Stewart Park, Middlesbrough.

There were fun activities organised for the children and re-enactor 18th Century marines, suitably "scurvy ridden" dropped in too.
