AN attempt is being made to revive a race for athletes in one of the most spectacular settings in the North-East.
For many years the fell race was one of the highlights at the Weardale Agriculture Society's annual show held at St John's Chapel, attracting competitors from all over the region.
But it was abandoned three years ago through lack of financial support and because some of the steep inclines on the three-and-a-half-mile North Pennines course were thought to be dangerous for runners.
Now officials are bringing back the race at this year's show, to be held on Saturday, August 31, at the showfield at St John's Chapel.
But the event will be a cross-country run over two-and-a-half miles, avoiding very steep inclines in the dale, but still taking in its spectacular scenery.
Race organiser Joan Warriner said: "We are aiming to make this as much a prestige event for runners as the old fell race.
"There will be prizes for both men and women - and children - taking part, and if it takes off this year, we will be looking at presenting trophies to the winners next year.
"You would be hard-pressed to find an area with such spectacular scenery to stage a race like this. We are hoping that competitiors will bring along their families as there are plenty of other events going on at the show."
