Kevin Phillips had a penalty save as Sunderland slipped to a 1 - 0 defeat at home to Everton.
Phillips was denied from the spot after 70 minutes by Richard Wright, who had conceded the spot kick when he barged over over Niall Quinn.
The only goal of the game came after 27 minutes when Kevin Campbell turned the ball in from close range after getting on the end of Tomasz Radzinski's lay off.
Sunderland twice hit the woodwork, to Phillips and Quinn, but Everton hung on and Sunderland were boo'ed.
