ANIMAL-loving TV presenter Claire Montgomery found herself making news instead of reporting it yesterday.
Montgomery, who has been a news presenter with Tyne Tees TV for five years, opened the new People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) shop at Yoden Way, Peterlee, County Durham.
The charity provides veterinary treatment for the pets of people on benefit at its centres in Sunderland, Newcastle and Gateshead, and the shops bring in vital funds.
Montgomery said: "We have had a cat for years. I particularly love Siamese cats. "I know that the public loves animal stories and this shop will do very well because people will relate to it. I wish it all the best.
"It's nice to come to Peterlee and meet people. Until now, I have never done anything other than news jobs in Peterlee."
PDSA spokeswoman Donna French said: "This is the 158th shop we have opened in the country.
"Whenever we open a new shop we always find a local celebrity to help us. Claire very kindly said yes.
"The shops play a vital role in raising funds and also raising awareness about what the charity is all about.
"We are a lifeline to many pet owners. About 70 per cent of the animals we treat are the only companion of pensioners who cannot afford treatment."
The new shop is on the look-out for volunteers and donations of stock.
