FORMER North Yorkshire police chief Jack Wright has died at the age of 75. He spent most of his 30 years' service in the police at Scarborough, rising to the rank of superintendent.
Six weeks ago Mr Wright had a pacemaker fitted after suffering several heart attacks. In retirement, he set up the successful Dial-a-Ride service for the disabled and pensioners in Scarborough. He leaves a widow, Doris and daughter, Belynda.
centre revamp: The Brunswick shopping centre in Scarborough is to get a £350,000 make-over. Manager Jim Hughes said: "The centre is ready for a revamp after 12 years. We are improving the entrances, lighting, and erecting new canopies as part of the scheme."
FUN FAIR: A travelling theme park returns on a site near Tesco, Catterick Garrison, from Wednesday to Sunday, September 4 to 8. The fair is open midweek from 5pm, and from 1pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Sponsored ride: Fitness fans are being urged to take part in a sponsored exercise bike ride at Stokesley Leisure Centre. It is part of a national event which aims to raise £150,000 top help fight breast cancer. Contact (01642) 711140 for details.
Footpath closed: Ramblers are being warned that the footpath at Cop Hall farm at Sessay, near Thirsk, will be closed from Friday until September 3 for site works to be carried out.
Planning appeal: An appeal has been lodged against Hambleton District Council's refusal to allow a two-storey extension to a house at Northfield, Thornton-le-Moor, and the change of use of agricultural land to domestic use.
Craft gallery: A new craft gallery has opened in Ripon. The March Hare Craft Gallery, in the small shops arcade, plans to hold regular exhibitions.
Poultry protest: Boroughbridge Town Council is protesting at plans to build a poultry unit that will accommodate 12,000 hens at Stump Cross Farm. Members of Harrogate Borough Council's planning committee are being recommended to approve the scheme.
