SOME of Britain's fastest men and women on water chose Teesside for a showdown of the sexes at the weekend.
The Tees Barrage, Stockton, saw the final round in this year's British Jet Ski Championships and the British Waterways Trophy Challenge.
British and European champions were among the 60 competitors in eight different classes. The biggest name there was Phil Pope, last year's British and European champion. But also making a splash were Vicky Beale and Lisa Barsby in the Ladies Ski and competing with the lads - Ria Pickard, who came to Teesside second in the Novice Runabout Stock class.
Participants came from Ireland, Scotland and the South of England, while Stockton was represented by Andy Bielby, racing for the first time in the Runabout Novice Stock class.
His wife, Liz, is secretary of the Tees Personal Watercraft Club, which hosted the event sponsored by barrage owners British Waterways.
She said: "To hold the final round of the championships here in Teesside is a great honour for the club, Tees Barrage and the area in general.''
Mrs Bielby said contestants enjoyed coming to Teesside because the viewing areas at the Barrage made it a spectator event.
