AN art gallery intends to put people in the picture - and it could lead to their work being displayed in the National Portrait Gallery.
Harrogate Borough Council's Mercer Gallery in Swan Road is joining the search to find some of the best self-portraits in the country.
Organisers of Self-portrait UK are inviting people to present themselves as they want to be seen.
Gallery spokeswoman Janine Taylor said portraits can be produced using any medium - from a quick sketch, cartoon or snapshot to a digital image, video, painting, drawing, photograph, creative writing or animation.
Self-portraits which best reveal the individuality, identity, imagination and diversity of people will be featured on Channel 4 and then displayed in the National Portrait Gallery, as well as touring galleries across the country.
Application forms are available at the Mercer Galley. The gallery is hosting a People in Pictures exhibition, featuring drawing, paintings, sketches and sculpture from its permanent collection.
The exhibition has activities for youngsters, including a chance to be a portrait detective and to dress up for a self-portrait. The event runs until September 7. For times, contact (01423) 556188.
