POLICE have mounted a campaign targeting drivers who ignore the rules on a popular seafront.
The crackdown is starting in the seafront areas of Roker and Seaburn after residents made several complaints about speeding, vehicle safety and general bad driving.
The complaints were made at meetings of police and community forums and neighbourhood watch groups, prompting officers from Sunderland City Area Command to look at ways of solving the problem.
As a result the campaign, which runs for eleven days from tomorrow, will concentrate on motorists who show no consideration for other drivers or pedestrians.
Officers will target speeding motorists, those driving dangerous or uninsured vehicles, and those who drive while using mobile phones.
Sergeant Gary Hetherington said: "We hope residents and visitors will be reassured that we are taking this matter seriously. We want everyone to enjoy themselves in a safe environment.
