A FORMER military barracks in Richmond which has served as a drill hall, a school canteen and dance studio, may now be converted into homes.
A planning application to turn the Garden Village building into six two-bedroomed houses and three two-bedroomed flats goes before Richmondshire District Council's environment committee on Tuesday.
The scheme would involve demolishing the dance centre and replacing it with a stone and slate building.
A report to the committee says the building appears originally to have been a drill hall.
It was also used for several years as an approved school canteen and, since 1984, has been the Richmond Dance Centre.
Officers say that while the principle of redeveloping the site for housing is acceptable, the historical importance of the building must be determined before decisions are taken. The dance centre relocated to nearby Lyons Road but has plans to create a studio at a former gymnasium at Scorton.
