WORK has started on a control room to monitor a security camera system in Hambleton.
Contractors moved into the civic centre in Northallerton this week to begin creating a new closed circuit television (CCTV) monitoring centre on the ground floor.
It will become operational later this year when civilian operators move from the North Yorkshire Police headquarters in Racecourse Lane.
Council leader June Imeson said: "Moving the control room into the confines of the civic centre secures the future of CCTV for the district.
"It will enable us to fulfil our commitment to continue the existing monitoring operation, as well as to expand the CCTV scheme - which will bring more of the district under our umbrella of cameras."
The authority has 41 cameras covering the town centres and car parks in the market towns of Northallerton and Thirsk.
Police announced last year that they would be withdrawing from primary monitoring of CCTV images, following a review.
