Bishop Auckland rugby club entertained Barnard Castle in their first pre-season game at West Mills last Saturday.
The Auckland squad, including several teenagers, played four 20 minute sessions to give captain Peter Sayer and vice-captain Peter Gallone the opportunity to assess their current squad of players.
Several of the club's former colts stepped up a level and showed they are more than ready to join the senior ranks, with excellent performances from Jimmy Atkinson, Richard Dodds, Stephen Rowell and Ronnie Maughan.
Stephen Oxley moved from the wing into centre and could well make the position his own. Of the newcomers, Adam Barker showed some blistering pace down the wing, while Andy Wightman's early experience in rugby league produced some stunning tackles.
Several of the older players showed they will not readily give up their places, with Ian Campbell and Richard Perkins prominent among the forwards. Peter Sayer's try-scoring 60 metre sprint down the touchline illustrated he has retained all the enthusiasm and commitment he is noted for.
The club still has a shortage of experienced front row players, but the overall picture suggests that Bishop will again provide entertaining rugby in the coming season.
There will be another pre-season match at West Mills this Saturday if Bishops can find suitable opposition. Kick-off will be at 3pm.
The league season starts on Saturday September 7 when the first XV open their campaign in the Durham and Northumberland third division with a trip to Richmondshire. The seconds are at home to Horden III. Bishops have been drawn away to South Tyne College in the first round of the Tetleys Junior Cup on Saturday, September 21.
