YOUNG people are to get the opportunity to run a £1m youth centre, which they helped to design, when it opens today.
A management committee of 15 pupils from both the Thornaby Community School and St Patrick's will oversee the running of the centre and its activities.
One NorthEast's Single Regeneration Budget funded the project and will meet the running costs although alternative funding sources are being investigated.
Sport England provided the funding for a climbing wall at the centre which also features an events hall, large screen entertainment system, Internet caf and advice for children about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse.
Permanent staff at the centre include a centre manager, a resource worker and a youth drug and alcohol worker, with youth workers visiting the centre at varying times throughout the week.
Centre manager Joanna Da Silva said: "The opening will make such a difference to so many young people. We're giving them the opportunity to take control of their own lives, learn new skills and meet new people."
John Williams, deputy chairman of One NorthEast said: "The opening of this centre is great news for young people in Thornaby.
"One NorthEast is delighted to have been able to provide the funding"
Thornaby has attracted almost £7m of Single Regeneration Budget funding towards a regeneration programme.
