DESIGNER of the clockwork radio, Trevor Baylis is a prime example of how simple ideas can make money.
Now, Business Link Tyne and Wear is calling for local companies to follow his lead.
Paul Crozier, business advisor at the organisation, said: "The North-East is world famous for ground-breaking inventions and for supporting good design, such as the new Millennium Bridge, so we already know the people of this region can produce winning business ideas.
"Business Link is urging business in the region who have a great idea to contact us, and we will try and find a way to make it happen."
Abstract Windows, of Gateshead, is one such company, taking the construction industry by storm with an invention to revolutionise bricklaying.
The company has developed a mat to act as a guide to show where to place the next layer of bricks, allowing even a novice to build a wall to the same standard as an expert.
Company owner Kevin Hewson came up with the idea when he was having trouble finding a skilled bricklayer to help build his conservatories.
He contacted Business Link for help with his idea.
He said: "As well as identifying funding through the DTI's Smart initiative for new inventions, Business Link took us through the application process and was primarily responsible for helping us achieve the maximum award of £45,000.
"We have now been able to design and produce a prototype to test the product and make it commercially viable."
The prototype has already received an endorsement from the Federation of Master Builders, which is keen to enter the device for its own European awards scheme.
