RIPON'S final meeting of 2002 - Racing Welfare Day - takes place tomorrow, when racing is scheduled to begin at 2.15.
The principal race is the Tote Exacta Handicap Stakes, a £12,000 contest over nine furlongs won last year by Hormuz, trained at Sessay by David Nicholls.
The opening race is a selling handicap contest for apprentice riders, named in honour of Roger Murray. It is one of several races organised mainly in the north by Racing Welfare in recognition of stable staff who have given a lifetime to the sport.
Mr Murray began his working life in racing in 1932, having spells at studs in England, Ireland and Argentina, interspersed with six years as a navigator in Lancaster bombers during the Second World War.
He then worked for many years as a groom at Cliff Stud, near Helmsley. He now lives with his wife, Vyvian, at Middleham and can reflect upon a wonderful career in racing
