AN advice centre has been saved from closure by its management committee and staff.
The Neighbourhood Advice Centre, Victoria Road West, Hebburn, seemed likely to shut down because it was owned by Cammell Laird, which went into receivership.
But employees and management committee members secured £31,000 to jointly buy the building with Hebburn Credit Union.
They received £25,000 from the Single Regeneration Budget and £6,000 from local businessman Albert Le Blond.
Centre chairman Jim Sewell said: "We moved into the premises in December 1997 and occupied them rent-free due to the generosity of Albert Le Blond/Tyne Tees Dock Yard, and latterly Cammell Laird.
"However, when the company sadly went into liquidation the building was part of its assets and the centre management committee had to buy it from the receivers, or face closure.
"We are very grateful for the financial support from South Tyneside Council, the Single Regeneration Budget (Round 4) and Mr Le Blond, who has been a marvellous supporter of the centre.
"As a result of this generosity we were able to save the jobs and continue to offer an excellent service to the people of Hebburn."
Credit union secretary Pauline Hudson said: "We are delighted that the centre has been saved because we offer a valuable service to the community and so many people depend on us."
To celebrate, an open day and rededication ceremony will be held at the centre on Friday.
Mr Le Blond will unveil a plaque in memory of centre stalwarts Mary Thomas and Neil Bonnar.
