Ottakars bookshop in Darlington has been renovated to incorporate a Costa coffee shop, which has created five jobs.
Costa now has 21 shops within Ottakars stores, seven in branches of Waterstones and two in WH Smith stores nationally.
The four recruits at Darlington will have to go to Costa's coffee college to be trained to prepare the hand-made coffee to a high standard.
Mike Tye, Costa managing director, said: "It's now more than four years since we opened our first book store concession in Ottakars. I hope local book lovers will soon discover the delights of browsing through the pages of the latest releases while relaxing with a freshly-brewed coffee."
