AN initiative which aims to cut traffic speeds has been launched in Hartlepool.
Special gateway features - a mixture of traffic islands, high-profile speed limit signs and road markings - are to be constructed on five approaches to the town.
They are designed to make drivers aware that they are entering an urban area enc-ouraging them to slow down.
The roads to be targeted include the A1086 Easington Road on the southbound approach to King Oswy Drive, the A176 West View Road on the eastbound approach to Bamburgh Road and the C162 Hart Lane on the southbound approach to Merlin Way.
Other stretches are the A689 Stockton Road on the northbound approach to Sappers Corner and, on the same road, the northbound approach to Truro Drive.
Hartlepool Borough Council's traffic projects engineer, Martin Moore, said gateway features are a well established measure associated with entrances to villages or a change in the speed limit.
The average cost of each improvement is expected to be about £12,000 with the bulk of the money coming from Local Transport Plan cash from the Government.
