A decaying tree is posing a danger to houses and to elderly Darlington residents, it has been claimed.
John Burdis has applied to the borough council to remove the 11-metre-high horse chestnut tree from Marigold Court.
He said large branches were falling from the tree - posing a risk to surrounding properties and their elderly occupants.
He also fears for his conservatory, which is only five metres from the tree and constantly in the shade.
There are also fears that the tree's roots may affect his property's foundations.
But officials are urging councillors on the planning applications committee to refuse the request when they meet tomorrow.
Council officers say the tree is not a hazard or a nuisance, and is in remarkable condition, despite damage by building work and previous pruning.
The tree is also highly visible in all directions over the neighbouring bungalows and stands out in an area with little tree coverage.
