Young people learn of rights
Durham Children and Young People's Council and Article 12 are jointly organising a day of fun and debate for young people and adults at Leech Hall, St John's College, Durham, from 10am to 4pm on Saturday. The free event will include workshops on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, what legal rights young people have and how to exercise them in school. Activities will include dance, circus skills and face painting. The event will end with a balloon release.
IRISH DANCING: Irish Set Dancing classes are being held in St Nicholas' Church Hall, Market Place, Durham, on Thursdays from 8pm to 10pm. Beginners are welcome, with or without a partner. Call 0191-565 9007 or 0191- 378 0619 for details.
FLOWER DISPLAY: Dunelm Flower Club meets on Thursday, September 19, in Durham Sixth Form Centre, at 7.30pm, when June Roberts, of Cleadon, will give a demonstration called Down the Garden Path. Non-members are welcome. Admission costs £3.
FOOD TALK: The Real Cost of Food, a one-day conference organised by church organisations and County Durham Local Agenda 21 Partnership, will be held in County Hall, Aykley Heads, Durham, on Saturday, October 26, between 9.30am and 3.30pm.
IT COURSE: Gilesgate Community Association, in Durham, is running computer courses, including desktop publishing, web page design and digital photography, starting next week. Many of them are free. For details call Diane Mahoney on 0191-386 1933.
COFFEE MORNING: A coffee morning featuring bric-a-brac, books, raffle and tombola, will be held on Tuesday, from 10.30am to noon, at The Institute, Church Street, Durham. Admission is free. Proceeds will go to the Durham Society for the Blind and Partially-Sighted and St Oswald's Guide Company.
ROCK NIGHT: The Charva Boys will be performing in the Stables Bar at the Beamish Mary Inn, No Place, near Stanley, on Thursday. Doors open at 8.30pm and there is a cover charge. For details call 0191-370 0237.
ALLOTMENT PLAN: Durham City Council is being asked to grant planning permission for a community allotment, including greenhouse, storage building, office and car park, to be built at the Welfare Allotments, near St Agatha's Close, Brandon.
