A MAN and a woman were arrested yesterday in the wake of a hit-and-run crash that left one man dead and another seriously injured.
Mohammed Mofiz Ullah, 68, of Hutton Street, Sunderland, was killed when the Vauxhall Cavalier he was travelling in was hit by a stolen Saab 9000.
Mr Ullah's nephew, Mohammed Mrhibur Rhaman, 29, of Hylton Road, Sunderland, who was driving the car, was yesterday continuing to receive treatment for head, neck and spinal injuries at Sunderland Royal Hospital. His condition was described as serious but stable.
The crash happened at about 2.20am on Monday in St Mark's Road, Sunderland, at its junction with Chester Street East.
Mr Rhaman had finished his shift at a nearby Indian restaurant and was driving his uncle to his home in the Millfield area of the city.
The impact tossed the Cavalier into the air, hurling Mr Ullah on to the road. He died before paramedics could get him to hospital.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police yesterday said a man and a woman were helping officers with their inquiries.
