A NORTH-EAST police force has been issuing "wanted'' posters to local vets because it is trying to recruit dogs.
Durham Police's dog training centre has only one animal booked on its next course, which starts on Monday, September 16.
In a bid to find suitable German shepherds, the force has sent up to 40 posters to veterinary surgeries and other venues appealing for donations.
The 13-week course is for general purpose policing and will take place at Harperley Hall, Crook.
Course organiser PC Ian Henderson said: "The posters in the vets' surgeries are there in case anyone has a dog which has become too big or boisterous, or if their personal circumstances have changed, meaning it's no longer possible for them to keep the animal.
"Ideally, we need more than two dogs for the next course. It is always advisable to have reserves just in case."
The force is looking for pedigree German shepherds aged between one and two that are fully vaccinated.
They should be bold, with a good temperament, playful and willing to search for a toy.
Anyone who believes they have a suitable dog or bitch should contact PC Henderson on (01388) 768279 or (07801) 857597.
