GREEN fingered pensioners have one of the best views in the North thanks to their own hard work.

Gardens at Runnymede Court, in Bishop Auckland, have been voted runners-up in a best garden award scheme run by the Hanover Housing Association.

Flower beds around the estate's 42 flats have been a riot of colour through the summer months and given residents a lot of pleasure.

Gardeners like 77-year-old Nora Gent have done all their own planting and weeding, often helping out neighbours who are not so agile.

Estate manager Barbara Hopper said: "Just because they have moved into flats, it hasn't meant that they have had to give up their gardens.

"They all work together and share them. They are very proud of their gardens and make sure they look nice all the time."

The estate won a £50 National Garden gift voucher from the association, which has properties around the country.

The winning entry came from another estate called Runnymede Court in Royton, Greater Manchester.
