THE farmers' market in Darlington is the first in the region to be recognised by a new national standard.

The Darlington market has met the standards set by the National Association of Farmers' Markets (NAFM).

Since the first farmers' market was held in Darlington in October 2000, they have become a monthly event.

Darlington's farmers market will now receive a certified logo which is recognised by organisations like the National Farmers' Union and the Soil Association.

NAFM co-ordinator, James Pravitt said: "Farmers' markets have become extremely popular over the past five years and are providing about 10,000 local food producers with an exclusive venue for them to sell their own produce directly. Certified farmers' markets are for local farmers, growers, bakers and brewers to sell their own produce directly to the public."

Stephen Harker, Darlington Council's cabinet member for community protection, said: "We are delighted to receive this award. It recognises the commitment of the Council and the market traders to maintain the high standards required."

Darlington's farmers' markets are held on the third Friday of the month, from 9am to 4pm. The next market will be on Friday September 20.
