A GULF War commander returns to his former regiment's museum this weekend to commemorate its role in the Korean campaign.
Former Durham Light Infantry (DLI) officer Sir Peter de la Billiere, who went on to lead British forces in the Gulf, is a guest at a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the regiment's active service in Korea.
He will unveil a plaque to honour all those who served with the DLI between 1945 and 1968.
The event, tomorrrow, at the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery, at Aykley Heads, forms part of an annual reunion of regimental veterans.
It also marks the opening of a new display commemorating the post-war period in the illustrious history of the DLI, until it was disbanded as a full-time regiment in 1968.
The display is funded by the Friends of the DLI Museum group backed by an Awards for All grant.
Everyone who gave active service in Korea, Cyprus and Borneo will be mentioned at the ceremony. The commemoration falls on the exact date 50 years ago that 1DLI, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Peter Jeffreys, landed at Pusan in South Korea.
Members of the battalion formed part of the Commonwealth Division of the United Nations force opposing North Korean and Chinese adversaries.
During the Korea campaign, the DLI sustained 148 casualties, including 23 officers and men killed with three others missing, presumed dead.
The weekend reunion events continue on Sunday, with an annual parade in College Close, at the rear of Durham Cathedral, prior to a service in the cathedral.
DLI Korean veterans will lead the parade of 16 branches of the Durham Light Infantry Association.
Tomorrow's ceremony begins in the grounds of the DLI Museum at 11.30am.
