Good causes benefited to the tune of around £8,000, thanks to the efforts of Cleveland Constabulary and the team at Wynyard Golf Club.

The main beneficiary of the money raised, at the Cleveland Constabulary Golf Pro-Am, was Hartlepool Hospice with £1000 being donated to TFM Radio's Make a Child Smile appeal.

A total of 41 teams contested the annual charity pro-am which was won by the team from The Stables pub, Wynyard Village.

Team captain Martyn Jones was fulsome in his praise, saying: "This is one of the best events of the year," he said.

"The course was magnificent and the organisation first class."

Professionals Philip Archer, of Birchwood, and Bobby Young, of Sandiway, shared the spoils, each recording a seven under par 65. They shared the prize money, too: £686 each.

The dinner and prize-giving was held in the Clubhouse at the end of play with the first ten teams receiving their awards from assistant chief constable Brian Bell.

The superb array of prizes were donated or sponsored by local and national organisations.

Wynyard Golf Club has hosted the event since the course opened in 1997, prior to which it was held at Middlesbrough Brass Castle. Since its inception 17 years ago the event has raised well in excess of £100,000 for local good causes.

Gary Munro, managing director of Wynyard Golf Club, has already promised the course and facilities to Cleveland Police for 2003.

"Our support is on-going," he confirmed, "and will be, I hope, for many years to come."
