England's first game since returning from the World Cup has ended all square after Portugal held Sven Goran Eriksson's men to a 1-1 draw at Villa Park on Saturday.
Rodriguez Costinha cancelled out Alan Smith's first half strike when he headed home a corner in the 79th minute.
England looked well in control in the first half and went ahead through Smith, making his full England debut, who headed home Lee Bowyer's precise cross five minutes before half-time.
The second half saw both sides make a whole host of changes and it was the visitors who looked the more dangerous after the restart.
Portugal, who endured a disastrous World Cup campaign, twice hit the woodwork before substitute Costinha found the net with a close range header.
