LINDA Walker's last day at work was full of surprises, thanks to the residents of St Matthew's Close, Leyburn, who were determined to make sure her 44 years as a postwoman did not pass unheralded.
They were out early to make surprise presentations to her as a token of their appreciation for her helpfulness and cheerful nature.
Mrs Walker was just 15 when she was offered the part-time job of postwoman around Ulshaw Bridge in February, 1958.
She was based at Middleham post office until it closed in 1974. She also worked part-time at East Witton post office and continued to deliver around Middleham until 1984 when she took on full-time duties in Leyburn.
"I loved working outside and you make a lot of friends," she said. "Around here people look after each other, and if you don't see somebody for a day or two you check."
