NASSER Hussain will lead England into Ashes combat this winter with history stacked against his side.
England have lost the last seven Test series against Australia - a wretched run that began in 1989.
Here, Northern Echo Sport takes a depressing trip through the last 13 years of Ashes misery for England.
1989: England 0 Australia 4
ENGLAND, captained by David Gower, were expected to retain the Ashes won so spectacularly in 1986-87. Instead, Australia - written off before they left the Southern Hemisphere - were easy victors.
High point: The end of the series!
Low point: Openers Geoff Marsh and Mark Taylor batting throughout the entire first day at Nottingham, closing on 301-0.
1990-91: Australia 3 England 0
FROM the moment captain Graham Gooch missed the first Test with a hand injury, England were doomed.
High point: David Gower's two centuries in the second and third Tests.
Low point: Gower and John Morris chartering a Tiger Moth biplane and flying over the ground where England were playing Queensland.
1993: England 1 Australia 4
AT last, England won a Test against Australia. Trouble was, the Aussies were 4-0 up at the time!
High point: A fit-again Angus Fraser inspiring England to victory at The Oval.
Low point: The emergence of Shane Warne. He has tormented England ever since.
1994-95: Australia 3 England 1
AUSTRALIA, now led by Taylor after Allan Border's retirement, won the first two Tests, and even a post-New Year rally by England couldn't arrest the woeful sequence.
High point: Darren Gough announcing his arrival as a top-class Test bowler with 6-49 in the first innings at Sydney.
Low point: Warne taking a hat-trick at Melbourne as England were all out for just 92.
1997: England 2 Australia 3
ENGLAND won the first Test but it was a false dawn. Glenn McGrath and Warne were a fearsome double act and the hosts' second win came when the series was lost.
High point: Hussain (207) and Graham Thorpe (138) murdering the Australia attack at Edgbaston as England triumphed by nine wickets.
Low point: The knowledge when England were 1-0 up that it wouldn't last. It didn't.
1998-99: Australia 3 England 1
ENGLAND might have actually drawn this series, but that would have been an unjust result. Australia were again by far the better team.
High point: Dean Headley's six wickets in Australia's second innings as England won by 12 runs at the MCG.
Low point: England being bowled out for just 112 in the first innings at Perth.
2001: England 1 Australia 4
HAVING gone into the Ashes on the back of four series wins and a draw, England were bullish. Their confidence was misplaced; Australia retained the little urn at a canter.
High point: Mark Butcher's epic 173 not out, the greatest innings of his life, to win the fourth Test at Headingley.
Low point: England's inability to dismiss either Steve Waugh, their long-term nemesis, or Adam Gilchrist cheaply.
