METRO operator Nexus is to meet representatives from the RMT amid continuing concerns over a possible firefighters strike.
The RMT is seeking assurances over the level of cover for its members on the Tyne and Wear Metro should a national strike by firefighters take place.
Nexus says the concerns raised are premature but has accepted that the position needs to be clarified.
A strike by firefighters in support of their bid for a pay rise could see the armed forces drafted in and Green Goddesses returning to the streets for the first time since the 1970s.
RMT regional organiser Stan Herschel said: "Nexus has agreed to meet us as a matter of urgency.
"I am really concerned as to how they intend to cover the Metro without professional assistance from firefighters."
Nexus says adequate arrangements are already in place to evacuate passengers from sub surface stations should fire break out.
