FIVE people were arrested last week as part of Middlesbrough Police's Dealer a Day campaign.

Officers carried out seven raids in the town, seizing cannabis resin and bush. A 31-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman were arrested for possession with intent to supply cannabis bush and released on bail and a 23-year-old man was bailed after being arrested for cannabis possession. A 23-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy, who had a warrant out for their arrests, were also arrested. The campaign has seen 326 people arrested and drugs worth more than £110,000 seized.

MATHS CLASS: Two pupils from Middlesbrough have won scholarships to an after-school maths class. Eleven-year-olds Scott Rowley and Glenn Jones, pupils at Acklam Grange School, will attend the Kumon study centre, in Green Lane, twice a week for 30 minutes of free tuition until next June.

CD BONANZA: Thrillers, romances and mysteries will be on library shelves in Stockton in the form of CDs later this month. Both children and adults will be able to listen to their favourite stories from the spoken word collection at Stockton's libraries from Monday. The collection of 42 unabridged titles have been brailled by the Open Technology Centre to enable easy access for people who are visually impaired.

SHIPS MEETING: The Teesside branch of the World Ship Society will meet on Wednesday, September 18, to view slides of recent shipping. The presentation, by Ron Mapplebeck, takes place at the Newport Settlement Youth and Community Centre, in St Paul's Road, Middlesbrough, at 7.15pm.

JUMBLE SALE: A jumble sale organised by Cleveland District Girls' Brigade will be held on Saturday at 1.30pm at Marske Methodist Church, Hummershill Lane. Admission is 20p. There will be home-baking and a nearly new stall.

FUN DAY: A family fun day in aid of Butterwick Children's Hospice will take place at Stewart Park, Ladgate Lane, Middlesbrough, on Saturday, September 28. To a stall at the event call (01642) 624231.
