THREE young musicians lived up to expectations when they were put forward for their GCSE exams a year early.

Hannah Corbett, Louise Butterton and Michael Higgins can concentrate on the rest of the curriculum this academic year after passing the GCSE music exam with flying colours.

The Gilesgate Sports College trio proved the Durham school has expertise away from the games field by showing potential in music lessons.

Department head Eric Williamson believed they had the ability to sit the GCSE exam last term, 12-months ahead of schedule.

The 15-year-olds did not let him down. Hannah scored an A pass, while Louise and Michael achieved B gradings.

Mr Williamson said: "They are gifted and talented students and we entered them early to push them and to challenge them. We can do this as the timetable permits some flexibility. It allows some younger students to attend GCSE lessons with years ten and 11.

Hannah shines as a percussionist, while Louise is a singer/pianist and Michael is a trombone specialist.
