A FORMER head boy has returned to his school to teach alongside his mother.
Michael Garmston, 24, was head boy at Hurworth Comprehensive School in 1994. He was also captain of the football team, which won the Darlington schools league and cup double twice, and the rugby team.
After studying at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College and gaining a sports science degree at Leeds Metropolitan University, he completed a teaching qualification in Bedford last year. Now he has returned to Hurworth as a PE teacher.
Mr Garmston said: "I originally did a placement here during my second year at Leeds Met and I enjoyed that, so I just kept coming in whenever I was here.
"It's a bit odd seeing it from a different point of view, being inside the staff room instead of out - and it's difficult trying not to call my old teachers Mr Dale and Mr Dunn."
The new teacher will have family support from mum, Jean, who has been a special needs teacher at the school for several years.
Mr Garmston said: "It's quite funny actually because she used to be a teacher when I was here as well."
