SECURITY remained tight at the region's airports yesterday as tension around September 11 failed to deter passengers from flying.
At Teesside Airport, armed police officers patrolled as part of heightened security measures which have been in place since the terrorist attacks last year.
John Waiting, business services manager at Teesside Airport, said: "Nothing can be 100 per cent secure, but we've got to ensure the security regime is robust enough to allow good security checks but do not deter people from flying. I'm pleased to say the passenger loads have been substantially high."
Security at Newcastle Airport was also at a heightened level.
A spokeswoman for the airport said: "Security is always a top priority. We are never complacent and will continue to respond to and meet with all security guidelines and regulations set by the Department for Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority.
