A waste management site has been approved by the narrowest of margins.
Yorwaste had tabled the proposal for Tancred Quarry at Scorton, but North Yorkshire County Council's planning committee vote was tied at 5-5. It was passed on the casting vote of chairman, Councillor Herbert Tindall.
Residents, Richmondshire District Council and Scorton Parish Council were among those who opposed the proposal, and almost 500 people signed a protest petition.
There were also objections from Teesside International Airport and Darlington Brown Trout Angling Association, as well as one on behalf of parents and pupils of St Mary's School, Bolton-on-Swale.
