HISTORY repeated itself yesterday as "Bishop Colman" once again walked the North York Moors - 13 centuries after his first journey.
Actor Ian McNicol re-enacted the part of the Celtic priest who walked across the moors to the Synod of Whitby in the year 664AD to defend his religion.
Yesterday's event took place as part of the North York Moors National Park's 50th anniversary celebrations, which continue until Sunday.
Walkers joined the bishop as he set off from Kildale to walk to The Moor's Centre at Danby, calling at Commondale and Castleton.
The actor then made the second part of the bishop's journey to the Synod at Whitby Abbey.
National park spokesman Mike Pratt said: "The day was extremely successful and upwards of 50 people turned up to join in.
"The weather was beautiful and Ian kept in character throughout the entire day.
"He was great to listen to, a natural storyteller, and it made people realise how important this area was."
The history behind yesterday's re-enactment marks the date that the Celtic church lost its authority to the Roman church and Colman lost his bishopric.
