Boldon CA go into tomorow's game against Redcar Town within striking distance of leaders Wolviston after nine games - and manager Norman Hunter is delighted with the progress the side has made since he took over last November.
Less than a year ago, Boldon were struggling at the wrong end of the table with a poor disciplinary record into the bargain but Hunter and his number two Paul Nellist have turned the club around to such an extent that only five players who were involved at the end of last year are still part of the squad.
"There was a big job to do when I took over. The side was second from bottom and a big clear-out was needed. Gradually, I have brought in a mix of youth and experience with the emphasis on younger players," said Hunter who after 14 years managing Sunday League sides is having his first taste of the Wearside League.
Stuart Pattison moved in from Hebburn Town when Hunter took over and other arrivals from Hebburn are Graeme Nesbitt, Stephen Handy and Craig Botcherby.
Four youngsters from Jarrow St Bedes, Mark English, Gordon Williams, David Stephenson and Christopher Barrett have also signed up as has David Graham from Cleadon SC.
"David Hague recently moved in from Jarrow Roofing. He was a big signing and confirmed that quality players are now prepared to play for Boldon. David's transfer followed on the switch of Mark Urwin from Hebburn a couple of weeks earlier," enthused Hunter.
"We have made a very good start to the season and we are all pleased with the progress which has been achieved in such a short space of time but obviously there is still much to do. I am confident though that we now have the nucleus of a strong squad to move the club still further ahead."
Wolviston lead the table following their win over reigning champions North Shields, who have failed to repeat the form they displayed throughout last season.
Birtley Town and New Marske have the same number of points but Birtley are second with a better goal difference, however, New Marske have a game in hand on both the top two teams and have conceded just eight goals, at least three fewer than any other side.
