Worthington CIU Summer Team Knock Out: Durham City pulled off a great victory in the quarter final on their visit to Stanley Central when they saw captain, Barry Stoddart sink the final black.
The home side had 34-point start and Walter Cornell's victory in the first frame extended that lead to 52. Michael Pratt then came through as a Durham hero when he made a magnificent win to move the visitors into a 27 points lead. John Atkinson revived the Central's hopes when he closed the gap to a deficit of fourteen points and Harry Grimes followed up to move the Stanley team ahead by 16 points.
The decider saw the meeting of the two captain's with Barry Stoddart steadily overhauling the lead against Mick Busby until he potted the final black to take Durham City through by nine points.
Newton Aycliffe made the come back of the competition when they entertained Second Division leaders, Sherburn Village and recovered from a deficit of over a hundred points with two frames completed. The visitors had 37 points start and increased this to one hundred and two after John Bower and Scott Mallaburn won the first two frames.
Stuart Neil started the Newton Aycliffe revival when he won his frame by 53 points. Marc Howe followed Neil's lead and put in a 33 break to move Newton Aycliffe 23 points ahead.
Bill Barrigan put Newton Aycliffe through by a massive margin when he won the final frame by 80 points.
Leeholme A received 83 points start when they entertained Fishburn A but they found their opponents too strong and only managed to draw one frame when Barry Shaw finished level with Wayne Oliver.
The Fishburn players who saw their team through by 91 points were John Carter, John Griffin, who put in a thirty-five break, Brian Quest and Charlie Hirst.
Third Division leaders, Wingate entertained First Division leaders, Old Shildon and received 73 points start. Michael Pratt closed this lead down to 33 points when he became the first player to beat John Bourne, who has only joined the league this season.
Charlie Blake won the second frame for Old Shildon to leave their deficit at five points.
The third frame should have featured Wingate's unbeaten Geoff Howe but he slipped and fell whilst carrying two glasses and needed first aid treatment.
This meant that Steve Allen played for Wingate and beat the visiting Billy Goggins by eleven points.
Geoff Howe then took his place at the table despite the bandaging and beat the visiting captain, Jossie Aldworth by sixteen points to push Wingate thirty ahead.
The decider between John Mason of Wingate and Andrew Aisbitt proved a cliffhanger with Old Shildon just edging through to victory when Aisbitt potted the final pink.
After the match Geoff Howe went to hospital where a cut tendon was diagnosed, but he hopes to be fit to try to maintain his unbeaten record in the remaining league matches.

Quarter final results: Scott Mallaburn & Peter McGowan (Sherburn Village) lost to Brian Graham & John Hall (Brandon); Michael Pratt & Jossie Aldworth (Old Shildon) beat Keith McLauchlan & Sonny Hann (Crowtrees); Tom Parkin & Gordon Parkin (Willington) lost to Arthur Goldsborough & Jeremy Martin (Willington); John Griffin & John Carter (Fishburn A) lost to Dave Robson & Adrian Jones (Ferryhill).
The semi-finals will be Arthur Goldsborough & Jeremy Martin (Willington) v Brian Graham & John Hall (Brandon) at Coundon to be refereed by Mark Brown of Leeholme on Thursday, 19 September and Dave Robson & Adrian Jones (Ferryhill) v Michael Pratt & Jossie Aldworth (Old Shildon) at Durham City on Wednesday, 18 September to be refereed by Harry Coates of Crook Belle Vue. Both matches are the best of five frames and start at 7.30p.m.
Worthington CIU Team Plate
Sacriston reached the semi-final when they beat the visiting Spennymoor B by only four points. The home side received 28 points start, which was stretched to 64 points following a good win from Dale Evans.
Alan Shaw and Alan Rowell then pulled the Moors right back into the picture when they both won their frames to move four points ahead.
Alan Clark stretched the Spennymoor lead to eight points when he won the fourth frame. In the decider Willy Nixon became the Sacriston hero when he managed to pot the final black to win the match by just four points.
Tow Law received 27 points start when they entertained Langley Park but this start was wiped out after Paul Morgan won the first frame for the visitors by 40 points.
Ray Coates continued the good run for the Park when he won the second frame by 55 points to push the visitors 68 points ahead.
Tommy Williams and Charlie Donaghy took the next two frames to restore the Lawyers hope when they reduced the deficit to 35 points. Heppell Hodgson made a sterling effort to take the Lawyers to victory but Stephen Renwick did enough to take Langley Park through by 30 points.
Newhouse, from the Second Division, visited Third Division, Coundon and surprisingly received two points start. The match was virtually over after Ian Dinsdale won the first frame for Newhouse by 78 points.
Dennis Payne and Frank Nicholson won frames for Coundon but Kevin Allison and John Maddox won their frames to take Newhouse through by 60 points.
The biggest victory in the quarter finals came at Wheatley Hill A where the visiting Shotton Palms received one point start but never produced their true form and never managed to take a frame. Big wins from Dave Walker, Ronnie Peacock, Dean Bryden, Alan Hall and John Worthington all won to take Wheatley Hill A through by two hundred and two points.
