FARMERS have been urged to be more vigilant after rising sheep prices prompted more livestock thefts.
Sgt Mick Rookes, of North Yorkshire police, said Swaledale and Wensleydale had been targeted by thieves recently, along with the borders of Teesdale and Cumbria.
Although he would give no further detail to Swaledale Parish Forum, which met at Muker on Wednesday, he said the force was aware of the problem and taking measures to catch the culprits.
Quad bike thefts also appeared to be increasing and police were considering a marking operation carried out via auction marts. "For some reason, Sunday nights seem to be a favourite with thieves and I urge farmers to be more aware of security," he said.
A tractor and trailer had been stolen from Swaledale at the weekend and was found in Bishop Auckland after being used to steal a load of carpets.
Sgt Rookes also asked farmers to look out for a J-registered white Transit van with an amber light on top, which had been linked with thefts in the area
