Community groups in Teesdale are being urged to come forward with ideas for projects, which could help secure more than £200,000 in European funding.
Thousands of residents living in Teesdale could benefit from part-funding for projects across the dale.
A meeting, organised by Teesdale District Council, was held in Gainford Village Hall on Monday evening to discuss projects that could be included in an application to Europe for financial help.
Residents and local agencies, such as 2D and the Durham Rural Community Council, have already highlighted possible projects that could improve recreational and sporting facilities for residents in the dale.
The wards involved in the initiative include Barnard Castle East and West, Gainford and Winston, Ingleton, Startforth East, Startforth with Boldron and Streatlam with Whorlton.
The projects will be included in a funding application that will then go before European officials, who will decide whether the projects should be supported.
But before any funding is offered, local communities must prove that they are willing to provide a percentage of the money needed.
Ann Johnstone, Teesdale District Council's regeneration officer, said the response so far had been very encouraging.
She said: "I think the meeting was a real success, and there seems to be a genuine desire among residents and the relative agencies to secure the funding.
"We need as much response from local communities as possible. People need to highlight any projects that they feel they would like to see completed and then we can put the application forward.
"The funding has not yet been secured but I believe there is a very strong chance that we will receive it if we can show that communities support the application and are willing to work hard to see projects completed.
"A lot of the projects already highlighted are ones that have been in people's minds for some time and this is the chance to see them become a reality."
The development plan must be completed by September 25, and anyone wishing to suggest projects can contact Ms Johnstone on (01833) 696217.
