THE new commander of the British Army's largest European base has taken up his post.
Fifty-three-year-old Colonel Jonny Hackett succeeds Colonel Nick Gaskell at Catterick Garrison.
"There have been many positive changes during my time at Catterick for both the soldiers, their families and the local community,'' said Col Gaskell, who is retiring to Wensleydale after three-and-a-half years as the garrison's senior officer.
"I look forward, eagerly, as a local resident, to the major projects already in the pipeline coming to fruition.''
Col Hackett - awarded the CBE in 1997 - arrives from the Joint Arms Control Implementation Group which he has commanded since May, 2000.
Married with two daughters, his hobbies include fishing, orienteering and painting.
