THREE blocks of flats should be demolished as part of efforts to stimulate demand for property in Darlington, councillors agreed last night.
Darlington Borough Council's cabinet decided to approve proposals to demolish properties in the Lascelles Park area of the town - at Gayles House, Kirby House and Manfield House.
Councillors are hoping that the move will cut vandalism in the area and alleviate some of the concerns of people living nearby.
Councillor Paul Baldwin, cabinet member for housing, said: "These are the types of properties that there is no longer a great demand for.
"There is little point trying to keep something going that people no longer want."
The scheme is to be funded through a Social Housing grant and by the Home Housing Association, which runs the blocks of flats.
The properties would be replaced by new accommodation for rent, which the council believes is more in demand from people on the housing waiting list.
