A STATELY home in North Yorkshire gained some new staff - of the four-legged variety - yesterday.
Staff at Castle Howard, near Malton, took their dogs into work in aid of The Blue Cross animal welfare charity.
Take Your Dog To Work Day was aimed to educate employers about the benefits of canine company in the workplace.
The Hon Simon Howard, his wife Rebecca, the chauffeur and the head gardener were just a few of those who kept their faithful friends close to heel for the day at Castle Howard.
Tracy Marshall, a resident personal assistant who also brought her pet to the castle, said: "Being able to bring Darcy to work with me on a regular basis is enormously beneficial and enjoyable for us both. She has made friends with everyone on the estate and loves greeting staff that come into the office to make a fuss of her.
"At lunch times we are able to take long walks around the lake, and she is often accompanied by her friends, Mr and Mrs Howard's dogs, Sandy and Bassey."
Sponsored by Pedigree, Take Your Dog To Work Day is one of the biggest and most popular events in the canine calendar. This year about 5,000 dog lovers registered for the event, from accountants and lawyers to private investigators and hairdressers.
A survey carried out by the charity showed that around a third of UK small businesses agree that allowing staff to take canine companions to work improves office life, mostly because it contributes to a more friendly atmosphere, increases staff morale and promotes better work relations.
The survey also found that GPs believe that just being in the presence of a dog can help reduce blood pressure and stress levels.
