AN off-duty policeman was beaten with a snooker cue and sticks by a gang of about 30 teenagers.
The 47-year-old officer, who has not been named, was set upon by youths and girls - including some who had been drinking - after warning them about their conduct.
He was left badly bruised after the attack, in Middle Bank Road, Ormesby, Middlesbrough, at about 8pm on Sunday.
Detective Sergeant Nick Owensaid: "The use of weapons in the streets, particularly against a police officer is very worrying.
"We are seeking the full co-operation of the local community to help provide information."
Anyone with information is asked to call him on (01642) 302626.
* Three youths have been charged with public order-related offences in connection with the attack.
